Rate Limiting, API limitations and known issues

  • Stories limitations:

    • Responses will not include Live Video stories.

    • Stories are only available for 24 hours.

    • New stories created when a user reshares a story will not be returned.
Once the story is no longer available on the Instagram platform it doesn't return from the Instagram API.

  • Instagram has a very strict rate limiting of 200 calls per hour per user, exceeding this limit will result in errors. You will receive a timeout and will have to wait until your quota refreshes.

  • You can't pull insights for media posted before the Instagram account was converted to a business account.

e.g. If an account was converted on the 27th of February you can't get insights for media posted before the 27th

  • You can only pull up to 10,000 latest media objects
  • Data used to calculate metrics can be delayed up to 48 hours.
  • Data "discrepancies" between the API and the web applications:

There is a known issue which is now by design that the likes (like_count) and comments(comments_count) values retrieved from the API are different than the web app.

This is due to the following:

  1. Comments count will not show private user comments.

  2. Like count doesn't count promoted post result.

i.e. only organic likes are counted and only public user comments are counted
